A closer look at intraspecific variation of Cerataphis brasiliensis (Hempel) (Hemiptera: Hormaphididae) Neotropical Entomology
Mews,Carina M.; Cabette,Helena S.R.; Albino,Jeyson L.D..
The aim of our study was to characterize Cerataphis brasiliensis Hempel, an aphid of native palm tree of tropical savannas (cerrado), and to record intraspecific variation. We found two parthenogenetic forms of apterous viviparae females of C. brasiliensis. We differentiate the two forms through measurable and qualitative characters: (i) length of cephalic horns, (ii) number of antennal segments, (iii) presence or absence of wax glands, (iv) location of siphunculi.

A new species of Uroleucon (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on Madia (Asteraceae) in Chile Neotropical Entomology
Delfino,Miguel A.; Gonzáles,Wilfredo L..
Uroleucon is one of very few aphid genera that have species indigenous to South America. A new species of aphid from Chile is described and illustrated, Uroleucon eumadiae sp. nov., living on the two South American species of the genus Madia (Asteraceae): M. sativa Mol. and M. chilensis (Nutt.) Reiche. Morphological characters are discussed and the characters by which this aphid species may be distinguished from related ones are given. The long, hairy last rostral segment of the new species suggests strongly a feeding adaptation, and parallels that of a North American Madia-feeding species in the same genus which is not, however, closely related.

Culture-Facilitated Comparative Genomics of the Facultative Symbiont Hamiltonella defensa ArchiMer
Chevignon, Germain; Boyd, Bret M.; Brandt, Jayce W.; Oliver, Kerry M.; Strand, Michael R..
Many insects host facultative, bacterial symbionts that confer conditional fitness benefits to their hosts. Hamiltonella defensa is a common facultative symbiont of aphids that provides protection against parasitoid wasps. Protection levels vary among strains of H. defensa that are also differentially infected by bacteriophages named APSEs. However, little is known about trait variation among strains because only one isolate has been fully sequenced. Generating complete genomes for facultative symbionts is hindered by relatively large genome sizes but low abundances in hosts like aphids that are very small. Here, we took advantage of methods for culturing H. defensa outside of aphids to generate complete genomes and transcriptome data for four strains of...

Parasitism rate of Myzus persicae (Sulzer) by Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) in the presence of an alternative, resistant host Rev. Bras. entomol.
Ferreira,Samira Evangelista; Sampaio,Marcus Vinicius; Silva de Oliveira,Reinaldo; Vasconcelos,Heraldo Luís de.
ABSTRACT The aphids Lipaphis pseudobrassicae (Davis) and Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) are important Brassicaceae pests, occurring worldwide and causing significant damage to crops. Interspecific variations in the resistance to natural enemies can potentially impact the interaction among aphid populations. Here we evaluated the hypothesis of associational resistance by determining if the presence of resistant aphids (L. pseudobrassicae) reduces the rate of parasitism by Diaeretiella rapae (McIntosh) on non-resistant aphids (M. persicae). The experiment was conducted using collard green plants infested with M. persicae and L. pseudobrassicae either resistant or susceptible to D. rapae. The percentage of parasitism by D. rapae was greater on...

Parasitism Rates of Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) (Hym.: Aphidiidae) on Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) and Aphis gossypii Glover (Hem.: Aphididae) Neotropical Entomology
RODRIGUES,SANDRA M.M.; BUENO,VANDA H.P..
The objective of the present study was to estimate the rates of parasitism of Lysiphlebus testaceipes (Cresson) on Schizaphis graminum (Rond.) and Aphis gossypii Glover under choice and no-choice condition tests. The experiments were carried out in a controlled environmental chamber at 25±1ºC temperature, 70±10% RH, and 12h photophase. Second and third instar aphid nymphs were used as hosts and for each colony one less than a day old L. testaceipes female was used. The previously mated and oviposition inexperienced female remained in contact with the hosts for 24 h. In the choice test 10 colonies of S. graminum and 10 colonies of A. gossypii having sections of sorghum leaves as substrate were used. For the no-choice test 10 colonies of S. graminum...

Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria reduce aphid population and enhance the productivity of bread wheat BJM
Naeem,Muhammad; Aslam,Zubair; Khaliq,Abdul; Ahmed,Jam Nazir; Nawaz,Ahmad; Hussain,Mubshar.
Abstract Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria increase plant growth and give protection against insect pests and pathogens. Due to the negative impact of chemical pesticides on environment, alternatives to these chemicals are needed. In this scenario, the biological methods of pest control offer an eco-friendly and an attractive option. In this study, the effect of two plant growth promoting rhizobacterial strains (Bacillus sp. strain 6 and Pseudomonas sp. strain 6K) on aphid population and wheat productivity was evaluated in an aphid susceptible (Pasban-90) and resistant (Inqlab-91) wheat cultivar. The seeds were inoculated with each PGPR strain, separately or the combination of both. The lowest aphid population (2.1 tiller−1), and highest plant height...

Winter prevalence of obligate aphid pathogen Pandora neoaphidis mycosis in the host Myzus persicae populations in southern China: modeling description and biocontrol implication BJM
Zhou,Xiang.
Pandora neoaphidis overwintering had been investigated by monitoring its prevalence in Myzus persicae populations in open fields. Cabbage plants in field plots were weekly taken after mycosis initiation, to count and examine the living and dead aphids infected by P. neoaphidis. Based on the field data, infection levels (I) varied with field temperature (T), relative humidity (RH) and aphid count (numbers of living aphids per plant, N) over days (D), fitting well to the modified logistic equation I=0.91/[1+exp(8.5+(2.0H T H RH-20.2NI0)D)] (r²=0.897), where H T indicated daily hours of low temperature (<4°C), H RH daily hours of high air humidity (>90% RH) and I0 primary infection level. The model demonstrated the abiotic and biotic factors...
